a bit of this & that

so i'm gonna make this a bit of this & that + all about agideas + one of the largest design festivals in the world. established in 1991 by ken cato.  basically awesome creatives from all over the globe speak on all things creative. we heard from ben parker of london based madethought + their work is amazing, especially their work above - done for paper company gf smith + so simplistic and beautiful. really love the clever use of large stacks of paper with a simple fold on the top to create signage. the september industry + realised the above photographs  today +

next designer i found really inspiring was sydney based designer jenny grigg + she showed us an in depth presentation on how she worked on designing book covers using tissue paper. the whole process was intriguing and resulted in beautiful simplistic shapes, reminding me a little of henri matisse's paper cut out works.

dana arnett of vsa partners + was another inspiring designer. i love the work vsa partners did for cole haan + amongst many other projects.

australian designer alex stitt + is probably most well known for the 'life.be in it' campaign which was established in victoria in 1975. i love the playfulness in his work and also the  simplisticity and use of colour and shapes are beautiful. his latest book 'autobiographics'  is brilliant. it can be purchased from the book depository + it was pretty awesome to hear from an iconic australian designer who has been in the industry for many years.

the guys from netherlands based design company autobahn + spoke about creativity in typography... and i'm pretty sure you all know how i feel about awesome typography.

david berman + spoke on how social justice and sustainability in design, can change the world. definitely one the most captivating and inspiring speakers. so inspiring that i went home last night and ordered his book 'do good design: how designers can change the world' from the book depository + i can not wait to get my hands on it and read more of what he spoke about in his 30 minute presentation. he spoke on everything from eco friendly typefaces + to encouraging designers to not work for corporations that lie. the thing i found really encouraging was how he spoke about just picking one area and doing what you can do support that particular cause. such as animal species that are endangered, or the number of children that die in the third world because they do not have access to malaria treatment. he also spoke about his travels to arusha, tanzania + in which a lot of you know i have been to twice and has a special place in my heart. he spoke about the coca cola signage that appears almost everywhere. do check out the youtube clip to find out more.

other designers that i found inspiring: made in katana + spencer harrison + shaun tan + carine thevenau +

can not wait for next years lineup! have a lovely weekend all... i will be burying myself in assignments.

mutemath

last thursday night farrah + and i saw mutemath + one of my favourite bands. they had never been to australia before, so you could say i was pretty excited. i met farrah in the city for dumplings (ohh so good) and then took a two minute train to the corner hotel to see one of the best shows i've ever seen. they were amazing live. like really amazing.

a bit of this & that

i love this typography project by tien-min liao + so incredibly creative, don't you think? she wanted to explore the relationships between upper-case and lower-case letters. amazing! at the moment i'm trying to get together some new business cards for myself. i liked my old ones + (liking my own work is big for me aha) but with the change of name i can no longer use them. i have been looking at heaps of different business cards for inspiration... still deciding a few things but have a much clearer idea of what direction i'd like to take, than i did a week ago. these kerr vernon + business cards are awesome. love the use of colour. kerr vernon + also created in collaboration with glasgow press + a collection of five letterpress postcards featuring songs by glasgow bands via+ especially love the neon pink covers.  the elephant/triangle pattern is something i worked on for a uni assignment. we had to create a pattern in illustrator. not sure how i ended up with elephants. i do love elephants, even more so after my travels to east africa and seeing them in their own habitat unlike the zoos we have back here. i started the pattern with triangular illustrations as i'm a tad obsessed with most things triangle... and then went on to the elephants. i loved this assignment despite it being a learning curve with making sure the pattern edges met up perfectly - i had the large pink elephant in half, so that one end would meet with the other to create the whole elephant. it was trickier than expected! but so much fun. have a lovely week all xx

25

last monday i turned 25. it's a little strange to be 25. i have never felt funny about a number until now. not that 25 is old or anything, it's just weird that i'm 25. i'm having a little gathering with some of my lovely girlfriends. i sent out the above invite with wooden little hand painted magnets i made. the invite consist of three square pieces of paper, joined together with some japanese coloured masking tape (a little obsessed with all the colours you can buy... oh dear).

kate & dan

over the past few months i have had some amazing opportunities to second shoot for some very talented photographers. in late december i second shot for the lovely amy oliver of amy oliver photography + these are from dan and kate's beautiful wedding. this was the first time i experienced 'the first look', which is when the bride and groom see each other before the ceremony. what a beautiful, lovely and special moment. don't get me wrong, i think the traditional way is also lovely but something different is always nice and fresh. plus i think it's  lovely for the bride and groom to share a quiet intimate moment with each other amidst a wonderfully busy day. thank you amy + for asking me to second shoot! xx
